Social and Emotional Development

At WeCare, we model healthy interpersonal relationships because we believe that emotional connections with adults and peers have a powerful and positive influence on a child’s overall development. WeCare teachers and therapists guide children as they interact with each other to encourage self-direction, self confidence and more:

Self Direction

Encourage self-direction

Encourage self-direction.

Our students learn to make independent choices, demonstrate self-help skills such as cleaning up, washing their hands with soap, pouring water with their hands, using the restroom etc. Additionally, they learn to move through classroom routines and participate in activities with minimum instructions from teachers.

Self-confidence

Foster self-confidence.

Our teachers engage children in discussions. We use open-ended questions to start a discussion (e.g., “What would you do if..” “How would you feel if…?”), ask questions that encourages students to describe their actions (e.g., “Charlotte, will you tell Alex how you tie your shoelaces?”), ask students to make independent decisions about which materials to use and how to approach their work.

Appropriate expression

of feelings and thoughts

Encourage appropriate expression of feelings and thoughts.

Our teachers help the children to describe and express a wide range of feelings such as sadness, anger, fear and joy. Children learn how to cope with anger and disappointment and express those emotions clearly. (e.g. expressing needs verbally without getting aggressive “I do not like it when take my toys. Stop!)

Pro-social behavior

Encourage prosocial behavior.

Encourage prosocial behavior.

Our teachers help foster prosocial behavior by providing specific feedback on positive behaviors (e.g., Anna, you are comforting Alex because he just fell down. Alex will feel better.”). Learning outcomes include: giving hugs, sitting next to a friend, holding hands, respecting the rights of others, saying “thank you,” “sorry,” and “please,” taking turns, sharing etc.

As you can tell we care a lot about what we do and how we ensure the success of your child. By utilising up to date child psychology techniques combined with tailor made lesson programs, specially designed facilities and highly experienced, nurturing staff you can be confident your child will have an education that revolves around expertise, quality and love.
